Herping @ Snake Road / by Margaret Liu

Today a couple of us from the Saint Louis Herpetological Society drove out to Snake Road in La-Rue Pine Hills, IL. We had a great time and found some neat critters - lots of frogs and toads, caterpillars, and a few snakes.

Rough green snake ( Opheodrys aestivus ) - Notice how the scales are keeled. This is a distinguishing feature used for telling them apart from smooth green snakes ( Opheodrys vernalis ), which look extremely similar.
