Today a couple of us from the Saint Louis Herpetological Society drove out to Snake Road in La-Rue Pine Hills, IL. We had a great time and found some neat critters - lots of frogs and toads, caterpillars, and a few snakes.
Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor)
Fowler's toad (Bufo fowleri)
Rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus) - Notice how the scales are keeled. This is a distinguishing feature used for telling them apart from smooth green snakes (Opheodrys vernalis), which look extremely similar.
Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
Western cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma)
